 45% think Julia Gillard would make the better Prime Minister and 33% prefer Tony Abbott – a narrowing of the gap between the two (from 18% to 12%) since polled last week.

 Julia Gillard is preferred 90% to 3% by Labor voters – and Tony Abbott is preferred 78% to 6% by Liberal/National voters. Greens voters prefer Julia Gillard 70% to 4%.

48% think Julia Gillard would make the better Prime Minister and 30% prefer Tony Abbott – a narrowing of the gap between the two (from 25% to 18%) since polled last week. This is almost identical to the last measure comparing Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott in June.

Julia Gillard is preferred 92% to 1% by Labor voters – and Tony Abbott is preferred 77% to 7% by Liberal/National voters. Greens voters prefer Julia Gillard 65% to 6%.

 Kevin Rudd has only slightly better ratings than Tony Abbott across key positive attributes such as hard-working (+5%), a capable leader (+5%) and trustworthy (+2%).

The main differences were that Kevin Rudd is perceived as more demanding (69%/52%), less narrow-minded (43%/53%), more superficial (52%/44%) and more complacent (38%/30%). Comments »

Q.  Regardless of your likely party choice for the next election, which of the leaders – Kevin Rudd or Tony Abbott – do you think overall would be the best Prime Minister?

When it comes to a choice between Rudd and Abbott as the better Prime Minister, 50% selected Rudd and 30% selected Abbott.  The results for Rudd shifted slightly (-1%) since we last asked this question in December 2009. However, there has been a five percent increase in the number of people that prefer Abbott and a decrease in the number of people that don’t know (-5%). 

Results followed party lines – 92% of Labor voters chose Rudd and 74% of Coalition voters chose Abbott. 

 64% of Green voters selected Rudd and 11% of Green voters selected Abbott.

 People aged 65 years and over were more likely to think Abbott would make a better Prime Minister (42%), 18 – 24 year olds were more likely to indicate they don’t know who would make a better Prime Minister (28%).   Comments »

Just under half (47%) of those surveyed think that Gillard would make a better Prime Minister, 37% selected Abbott and 17% don’t know. 

 Results followed party lines – 78% of Labor voters selected Gillard and 79% of Coalition voters selected Abbott. 

61% of Green voters think that Gillard would make a better Prime Minister than Abbott.  

Males were more likely than females to select Abbott (40% v 34%).   46% of males and 47% of females chose Gillard.  

People aged 65 years and over were more likely to think Abbott would make a better Prime Minister (47%) and people aged 18 – 24 were more likely to indicate they don’t know (31%).  Comments »

In a choice between Rudd and Hockey as Prime Minister – over half (53%) think Rudd would make a better Prime Minister, 27% prefer Hockey and 20% don’t know. 

Results followed party lines – 88% of Labor voters prefer Rudd and 56% of Coalition voters prefer Hockey. 

Hockey performs better than Rudd amongst those that don’t know which party they will vote for in the next Federal election (50%). 

People aged 65 years and over were more likely to prefer Hockey (42%) and 18 – 24 year olds were more likely to indicate they don’t know (31%).  Comments »

When it comes to who people think would make a better Prime Minister – 45% support Kevin Rudd, 26% support Julia Gillard and 29% don’t know.

Labor voters were more likely to support Rudd (69%), Green voters were more likely to support Gillard (42%) and Coalition voters were more likely to indicate they don’t know who would make a better Prime Minister (41%).

Males were more likely to think Rudd would make a better Prime Minister (50%), while females were more likely to prefer Gillard (29%).

In terms of age differences, support was strongest for Rudd amongst the 18 – 24 year olds (55%). Rudd’s support decreases as age increases with 40% of people aged 55 years and over favouring Rudd as Prime Minister.   Comments »

22% of people think Joe Hockey would make the best leader of the Liberal Party, 14% prefer Malcolm Turnbull and 9% prefer Tony Abbott. Just under half (47%) do not think that any of those listed would be the best leader of the Liberal Party – 19% prefer someone else as leader and 28% don’t know.

28% of Coalition voters think that Joe Hockey would make the best leader of the Liberal party, 20% of these same voters prefer Malcolm Turnbull and 13% prefer Tony Abbott.  Labor voters were more likely to think that Joe Hockey would make the best leader (27%).
